Are any of you obsessive package trackers like me? You buy something online, and suddenly you’re refreshing the app every twenty minutes. “It’s at the facility. It’s on the truck. It’s four stops away!” We live in a world where we desperately want to see the progress before we actually relax and believe the package is coming.
But when it comes to prayer, God operates on a completely different tracking system.
Today, we’re looking at an incredible story in John 4:47-53. A government official comes to Jesus because his son is sick, on his deathbed sick. He’s desperate. He begs Jesus to travel down to his house and heal the boy.
John 4:47-50 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
Jesus doesn't pack a bag. He doesn't catch a ride. He just looks at the guy and says, "Go. Your son will live."
There are three shifts this father makes that will completely transform our prayer lives this week if we grab ahold of them.
1. Know What He Said: First, notice that Jesus didn't give this dad a physical sign; He gave him a word. The Bible says the man heard what Jesus said. If we want to be powerful prayer warriors, we have to start by knowing what God actually says about our situations. We don't just pray our feelings, though God can handle our emotions! We pray His promises. We have to open the Book, find out what He said about our peace, our families, and our futures, and anchor our prayers right there.
2. Believe Before We See the Results: Look at verse 50. It says: "The man took Jesus at his word and departed." I love this so much. Think about the crazy faith of this dad! He didn't have an iPhone to FaceTime home and check if the fever broke. He didn't have a text update. He had zero physical proof that anything had changed. All he had was a sentence from Jesus.
Faith isn't believing after we see the breakthrough. Faith is taking Him at His word while we’re still walking in the dark. When you wrap up your prayer time today, you might not see the answer immediately. Your circumstances might look exactly the same as they did ten minutes ago. But a warrior says, "If Jesus said it, that settles it. I take Him at His word."
3. Act on What He Said: The scripture says he departed. He started walking home. His action followed his alignment with Jesus' word. He didn't stick around begging for a backup plan. He didn't say, "Hey Jesus, can you write that down just in case?" He turned around and walked toward his future acting like the miracle was already done.
Church, the moment you pray, things shift in the spiritual realm because Jesus fulfilled the promise of the cross. You might not see the report change until "tomorrow," but God started moving the exact second you opened your mouth in faith.
As we head into our individual prayer times, let's step up as warriors who don't need to see it to believe it.
Pray the Word: Bring specific scriptures to God today. Remind yourself, of what He said.
Pray with Expectation: Let's stand in the gap for our families, our church, and our communities, believing that the moment we pray, the fever breaks, the chains crack, and the shift happens.
Act on What God Said: Leave your prayer time today acting like a winner, because we serve a God who keeps His word.
