Have you ever tried to move something ridiculously heavy all by yourself? Maybe you tried moving a massive piece of furniture up a flight of stairs, or tried pushing a stalled car out of the driveway. You’re sweating, your face is turning red, your muscles are screaming, and the thing hasn't budged an inch. It’s exhausting, right?
Too often, that’s exactly how we approach our prayer lives. We stand in front of massive, intimidating problems and try to push them in our own human strength.
But listen to what Jesus says in Mark 11:22-24 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
The selfish part of me wants to read that and say, I just have to pray harder, do more. But Jesus doesn’t say, “Have faith in your own willpower,” or “Have faith in how hard you pray.” He says, “Have faith in GOD.”
When Jesus spoke these words, He was most likely standing with His disciples near the Mount of Olives, looking right across the valley at the massive Temple Mount, “this mountain” was a man made temple that just a few verses before He had cleared. He was showing them that human self-reliance, trying to push life's burdens in our own strength or earn God's favor through our own efforts, is completely powerless.
In that culture, as it is today, moving a mountain was a common phrase for overcoming an impossible obstacle. Jesus was telling His disciples: Stop trying to shovel the mountain with your own hands! Look to the God who created the mountains!
And Jesus is our ultimate Mountain Mover! On the cross, Jesus stood before the biggest, most terrifying mountain in human history: the insurmountable wall of our sin, guilt, and death. We couldn't climb over it, and we couldn't push it away. But through His holy life, His death on the cross, and His glorious resurrection, Jesus cleared that mountain! He paid the price for our sin and gave us the path to eternal life.
Because of Jesus, when we pray, we don't pray to bargain with God or twist His arm. We pray as redeemed children, standing on the finished victory of Christ!
So as we head into our prayer time today, let’s bring our mountains to the Savior who already conquered the grave.
Self-Reflection: What mountain are you staring at right now? Is it anxiety, a tough diagnosis, or a strained relationship? Take a breath, drop the self-reliance, and hand it over to Jesus. Ask Him: "Lord, help me stop staring at the size of my mountain and start trusting the size of my Savior."
Pray for Others: Look around at your family, your church, and your co-workers. Who in your life is trapped behind an impossible mountain right now? Let's intercede boldly for them! Pray that God would surround them with His peace, sustain them in the valley, and reveal the saving love of Jesus in the midst of their trial.
Let’s pray with bold, joyful confidence today—not because of who we are, but because of who Jesus is and what He’s already done.
